Freight Broker / Transportation Sales Rep - Houston, TX

Capital Professionals is assisting our privately held, non-asset-based, Freight Brokerage company located in Houston, TX that specializes in logistics and transportation freight services in their expanding search for Freight Brokers/Agents to add to their existing teams. The company specializes in Dry Van, Flatbed, Reefer, Liquid Bulk, Expedited, Hotshot, Drayage, LTL, and Specialized Heavy Haul.

The Freight Broker/Agent is responsible for the complete sales process including prospecting, lead generation, pricing, and closing the business. Will prepare rate proposals to prospective and new clients for various transportation services while utilizing knowledge of market trends to provide strategic solutions. The freight broker will generate a book of business by making phone calls and developing prominent level relationships with key decision makers. The challenge is to increase revenues and maximize profitability.

This position has a highly competitive base salary with unlimited and extremely lucrative commission plan that pays out on the gross profit from the first dollar earned. The company provides medical and vacation benefits and there are no hidden fees of any kind in their compensation plan and commissions are paid out monthly based on gross profit.

Essential Functions
  • Execute day-to-day management of brokerage freight moves, with primary responsibility for identifying and securing cost effective capacity with reputable carriers in support of Customer shipment requirements.
  • Proactively manage, develop, build, and secure successful shipping and carrier relationships.
  • Source and negotiate with carrier base to move customer loads at lowest cost while maintaining all service level requirements.
  • Follow through on each load transaction from beginning to end ensuring successful delivery of customer shipment, including resolution of any issues that may arise during shipment
  • Ensure a consistent elevated level of customer service.
  • Actively monitor transportation market conditions with emphasis on trends, events and other factors that may impact market pricing for the company and our carrier partners.
  • Monitor and report on carrier performance issues in support of Carrier Relations.
  • Track achievement toward individual financial goals related to freight revenue and freight gross margin.
  • Monitor and aid in POD retrieval, tracking activation, and other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
  • #1 Self-discipline and drive.
  • At least 2 yrs. in asset or non-asset-based freight brokerage required.
  • Robust system knowledge including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, and the ability to learn and utilize transportation management software (TMS). Previous use of Aljex TMS, DAT, Truckstop, Macropoint and Salesforce CRM a plus.
  • High School diploma/GED required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business management, logistics, supply chain or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Current book of business a minimum of $30K in Gross Profit sales for the last two years.
  • Independent, self-starter, ability to handle a high volume of work is required.
  • Negotiation skills: Demonstrated ability to negotiate and “broker” truckloads for maximum profit and necessary service to customer.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and must be able to multi-task and reprioritize tasks for self and team as necessary under pressure.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and negotiation abilities are key for this role.
  • Ability to professionally interact with all levels of management both internally and with customers, vendors, and carriers.
  • Must be professional, dependable with excellent attendance, able to work both independently and in a team atmosphere and possess good business acumen and judgment.
  • Positive, flexible, and proactive approach to all work situations.
  • Customer service: manages difficult or emotional customer situations and responds promptly to customer needs.
  • Teamwork: balances team and individual responsibilities, gives and welcomes feedback, contributes to building a positive team environment.

  • Speak Spanish is a plus but not required.
