Structural Steel Welder and Fitter Roles
Capital Professional Staffing is recruiting experienced Structural Steel Welders and Fitters for a growing structural steel and industrial fabrication operation in Tyler, Texas.
These positions require previous structural steel or heavy metal fabrication shop experience. Candidates may be stronger on the welding side, fitting side, or experienced in both. Welders must have strong wire-feed Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) experience, while Fitters must be able to independently read structural steel shop drawings and use those drawings to lay out, fit, and fabricate steel assemblies accurately.
The facility has new, state-of-the-art fabrication equipment and substantial production work underway.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Read and interpret structural steel shop and fabrication drawings, including drawings provided in PDF format
- Fabricate, fit, and weld structural steel assemblies according to drawings and specifications
- Lay out components and accurately locate plates, stiffeners, clips, connections, holes, and other fabricated parts
- Fit and/or weld beams, columns, channels, angles, plate, structural shapes, connections, and other fabricated steel components
- Measure, mark, cut, position, align, and fit steel components
- Perform FCAW wire-feed welding on structural steel components and fabricated assemblies
- Perform tack welding as required during fit-up
- Read and understand weld symbols, joint preparation, welding requirements, and fabrication requirements
- Set and adjust welding equipment appropriately for the work being performed
- Perform multi-pass welds as required
- Verify dimensions, squareness, alignment, and tolerances before final welding
- Inspect fit-up, welds, and completed work for accuracy, quality, and conformance
- Identify and correct fit-up or welding issues before assemblies move further into production
- Perform grinding, cleaning, preparation, cutting, and related fabrication work
- Use tape measures, squares, levels, layout tools, grinders, cutting equipment, and other common fabrication tools
- Work closely with welders, fitters, CNC operators, and other fabrication personnel to maintain production flow
- Maintain productivity while consistently producing accurate, quality work in a high-volume fabrication environment
- Follow established shop safety, welding, and quality procedures and maintain equipment and work areas
QUALIFICATIONS
- Structural steel or heavy metal fabrication shop experience required
- Strong structural steel welding, fitting, or combined welder/fitter experience
- Welders must have strong FCAW wire-feed welding experience and experience welding structural carbon steel
- Fitters must have strong layout, measurement, and fit-up skills and be able to independently work from structural steel shop drawings
- Ability to read structural steel shop drawings and understand weld symbols
- Knowledge of structural steel shapes, plate, connections, fabricated assemblies, and fabrication tolerances
- Strong understanding of fit-up, joint preparation, welding sequence, and weld quality appropriate to the work performed
- Must be comfortable working around heavy steel and fabrication equipment in a fast-paced shop environment
- Candidates applying as welders should be prepared to demonstrate their welding ability as part of the hiring process
