Construction, Oil and Gas Controller

We are excited to be working with a prominent and well established oil and gas construction client who is seeking an experienced and strategic Corporate Controller to oversee all financial operations for our construction and oil & gas divisions. This individual will be responsible for financial reporting, job costing, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and internal controls. The Controller will play a key leadership role in supporting operational decision-making, ensuring financial accuracy, and helping the company scale sustainably in a fast-paced and highly regulated industry environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management & Reporting:

  • Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes across multiple entities.
  • Manage general ledger accounting, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and fixed assets.
  • Oversee cash flow management, including forecasting and treasury functions.

Job Costing & Project Accounting:

  • Implement and manage job costing systems for construction and oilfield projects.
  • Collaborate with project managers to track actual vs. budgeted project performance.
  • Analyze project margins and identify variances or cost overruns.

Budgeting & Forecasting:

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, including departmental and capital budgets.
  • Develop financial forecasts and scenario analyses to support business planning.
  • Provide management with reports and KPIs to guide financial and operational decisions.

Compliance & Controls:

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax and regulatory requirements, including sales/use tax, payroll tax, and industry-specific regulations.
  • Maintain internal controls and implement procedures to prevent fraud and errors.
  • Liaise with external auditors, tax professionals, and regulatory agencies.

Leadership & Strategic Planning:

  • Supervise and develop the accounting and finance team.
  • Participate in executive leadership meetings, offering financial insights to support strategic initiatives.
  • Evaluate and implement accounting software and systems to improve efficiency and reporting accuracy.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience; at least 3 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role
  • Strong background in construction or oil & gas accounting (experience in both preferred)
  • Deep knowledge of job cost accounting, WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion (POC) revenue recognition, and production-based financial modeling
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Enterprise or Desktop, or similar
  • Experience with payroll, multi-state operations, and contract compliance **experience with ADP**
  • Experience self-funded insurance
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and team development skills

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Multiple Entity Corporations and Intercompany Consolidating            
  • Knowledge of ASC 606 (Revenue from Contracts with Customers)
  • Familiarity with oilfield services pricing structures and cost drivers
  • Understanding of insurance, bonding, and lien requirements in construction projects
